PARTNERING WITH THE COMMUNITY

Members generously donated over 100 children's books

for Grassroot Givers to provide to migrant children.

WCA Community Service Committee members volunteered with the Street Soldiers of Albany distributing items donated by WCA members at a recent Street Soldiers event in downtown Albany to assist the homeless.

COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES

The Community Service Committee was created to coordinate the fulfillment of the Woman’s Club mission to support women and children. Here are some of the exciting ways we accomplish our goals:

  • Leaders of our community partner organizations are invited to our Member Monday Meetings to educate us regarding their history, goals and current needs. Their personal stories about the people they serve, as well their compassion and determination to improve their lives never ceases to inspire our members to ask “What can we do to help?”
  • Throughout the year, our Committee regularly organizes collections of the expressed items our Community Partners are in need of, such as personal care items, food, clothing, bedding, books and school supplies. Whenever our members personally witness the gratitude for our contribution and the dedication of our Community Partner to those under their care, it always leaves us wanting to do more.
  • We really know how to put the “FUN” in our fundraising activities. Our joint participation with all our WCA Community members results in a long creative history of raising money for our Community Partners through entertaining and informative public events held at our House, as well as assisting our Community Partners in their own fundraising events. This collective effort enhances a stronger sense of purpose and connection to our community.
  • The WCA opens our House to host Together Women Rise, which supports programs around the world to improve the lives of women and children. We also host the SEWS program of Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County, which offers immigrant women an opportunity to learn English, while mastering sewing skills.
  • Whether it’s creating flower bouquets for Nursing Home residents or valentines for those who sometimes feel forgotten, it’s these simple hands-on activities at the WCA House that can mean so much. Or maybe it’s going out to one of our Community Partners’ locations to help serve food, read to a child or help price items for their big fundraiser? These are the moments that help us develop a personal connection with the staff and the members they serve, as well as making new friends!

Thanks to all who donated laundry detergent and men's deodorant to support Things of My Very Own. We collected 22 laundry detergents of different sizes worth about $206 and 98 men's deodorants worth about $196.
